About José Ferreira Gomes

Associate Professor at the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Lisboa (FDUL), legal expert and arbitrator in the areas of civil law and commercial law, including commercial contracts, M&A, company, securities, banking and insolvency law.

José Ferreira Gomes holds a PhD in Law from the FDUL (2014), an LL.M. from Columbia University in New York (2004) and a bachelor’s degree from the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade Católica Portuguesa (2001).

Throughout his career, José Ferreira Gomes has conducted research at renowned institutions, including Columbia Law School (New York), where he was a Visiting Scholar and Research Fellow (2007-2008), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (Munich), Max-Planck-Institut für ausländisches und internationales Privatrecht (Hamburg) and, most recently, Oxford Law Faculty, where he was an Academic Visitor (2023). He has received several fellowships, including from the Foundation for Science and Technology and the Max-Planck-Institut für ausländisches und internationales Privatrecht (Hamburg).

José Ferreira Gomes is also the author of numerous publications on the General Theory of Civil Law, the Law of Obligations, Company Law, Securities Law and Banking Law.

2001-2007 – Trainee lawyer, Junior Associate and Senior Associate at Uría Menéndez.

2006-2014 – Trainee Teaching Assistant and Visiting Teaching Assistant at the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Lisboa (FDUL).

2013-2014 – Head of legal of the markets, issuers and information department of the CMVM – Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários (the Portuguese securities commission).

2014-2021 – External Counsel to the CMVM, advising the board of directors on regulatory and supervisory matters.

2014-2023 – Assistant Professor at the FDUL.

Since 2023 – Associate Professor at the FDUL.

José Ferreira Gomes teaches civil and commercial law to undergraduate, masters and PhD students; collaborates with other faculties in Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries, especially Brazil, Angola, Mozambique and Cape Verde, as well as with the Centro de Estudos Judiciários (CEJ) and the Instituto de Registos e Notariado (IRN). He has also advised the Instituto Português de Corporate Governance (IPCG) (2008-2009) and the Banco de Portugal (BdP) (2015) on corporate governance and bank governance. He collaborated with the CMVM as an external expert in the preparation of the project leading to the reform of the Securities Code of 2021. Moreover, he participates in international research projects with different institutions from different countries.

José Ferreira Gomes has been a member of more than a dozen arbitration tribunals, either as co-arbitrator or president. He has also acted as a legal expert in dozens of national and international court and arbitration cases, including ICC arbitrations and judicial cases in London and Amsterdam.

Member of the Associação Portuguesa de Arbitragem (APA), the Club Español e Iberoamericano del Arbitraje (CEIA) and the Comitê Brasileiro de Arbitragem (CBAr). He is a member of the list of arbitrators of the Câmara de Mediação e Arbitragem Empresarial-Brasil (CAMARB).

Researcher at the Centro de Investigação de Direito Privado (CIDP) and member of the Instituto de Direito Privado (IDP), the executive committee of the Código das Sociedades Comerciais Anotado, the board of the Erasmus and international relations office of the FDUL, the board of the careers office of the FDUL and the academic council of the FDUL.

José Ferreira Gomes is a member of the editorial board of the journal European Company Case Law and of the scientific board of the journal Cooperativismo e Economía Social.

He is also a member of the Associação Luso-Alemã de Juristas (Deutsch-Lusitanische Juristenvereinigung), the association Freunde des Hamburger Max-Planck-Instituts für ausländisches und internationales Privatrecht e.V., and the Governance Lab, a research and critical reflection group on issues related to the governance of organisations, coordinated by Paulo Câmara.

José Ferreira Gomes has a considerable number of publications, both nationally and internationally.

His academic output reflects a constant commitment between theoretical grounding and addressing specific issues of market practice.

José Ferreira Gomes is a regular speaker at conferences and seminars, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge and debate on current challenges in civil and commercial law.
